The Department of Education recently announced that it is investigating the universities caught up in the notorious admissions scandal.
Universities that now have to explain their actions (or lack of them) to the DOE include the University of Southern California, Yale, Georgetown University and Stanford. As part of the investigation, the universities in question will need to give the Department of Education documents related to their admissions process. These include not only materials that are available to the general public, but also private documents pertaining to internal policies and procedures.
If the universities are found guilty of violating federal education guidelines, there could be severe penalties. In the worst-case scenario, the universities in question would no longer qualify for access to Pell Grants and federal student loans. Such a penalty would put a severe dent in enrollment and tuition. Above all, the outcome would be nothing less than humiliating for institutions that cast themselves in such a positive light.
At the same time, the Department of Justice could also take action against individuals who are found guilty of failing to follow guidelines ensuring a fair admissions process to all students.
Given the fact that these leading liberal educational institutions are facing severe consequences, it is interesting to note that most of them don’t seem to be taking the matter very seriously. Yale rescinded the admission of a single student. The University of Southern California has put a few student accounts on hold, and is vowing to take action against any students whose parents are involved in the scandal. Yale and two other colleges have promised to increase oversight of the athletic recruiting process to ensure that students who get into the university in this way actually have the abilities that they claim to have.
A number of universities have fired people they believe were involved in the scandal. However, most universities are refusing to make significant changes in their admissions processes. What is more, many are complaining that they are victims of a scam that they had no idea even existed. This complaint will be taken seriously by no-one. In fact, several individuals are already suing many of these same universities for billions of dollars due to the fact that the cheating scandal.
Those who are tired of seeing ultra-liberal universities use their power and prestige to promote a left-wing agenda, silence conservative voices, and act as indoctrination centers will be pleased to see these institutions face justice. As the investigation continues, there are sure to be even more surprises and perhaps even more universities may face government scrutiny.
William Singer, the man at the center of the university scam, has told federal authorities that he helped 800 families gain admission to prestigious universities. At present, fewer than 10% of these families have been identified and charged. Hopefully, the DOE’s investigation will change that.
